Orthoptists are specialist healthcare professionals who assess, diagnose and treat a range of eye conditions. These include:
- Vision problems
- Eye movement issues
- Squints (where the eyes do not look in the same direction)
- Double vision
Orthoptists are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Who we work with
Orthoptists work closely with a range of healthcare and support services, including:
- Eye doctors (ophthalmologists)
- Optometrists (opticians)
- Health visitors and school nurses
- Paediatricians
- Social services
- Voluntary organisations
Joint appointments are often arranged to make sure patients receive coordinated and effective care.
Visual field testing
The Orthoptic Service also provides visual field testing. This checks how well you can see around you (your peripheral vision).
The test is carried out using specialist equipment by trained staff. You may be referred for this test if you have:
- Eye conditions such as glaucoma
- A medical condition such as a head injury or stroke
