Motor neurone disease affects the nerves (motor neurones) that send messages from the brain to the muscles. When these nerves stop working, the muscles gradually weaken.
This can affect:
- movement and mobility
- speech and communication
- eating and drinking
- breathing
Some people also experience changes in thinking and behaviour. These are usually mild but can be more noticeable for some.
