Paediatric and Neonatal Clinical Psychology Service

The Paediatric and Neonatal Clinical Psychology Service supports babies, children, and young people, as well as their families.

We work with:

  • Babies receiving care in the Neonatal Unit at Antrim Area Hospital
  • Children and young people with diabetes or epilepsy, who are under the care of a paediatrician
  • Children and young people with complex physical health needs

In some cases, babies from outside the Northern Trust area may be seen while they are staying in the Neonatal Unit at Antrim Area Hospital.

Our aim is to help families cope with the challenges of a child’s illness or time in hospital. We offer a listening ear, practical support, and help you find ways to manage and move forward.

We also support healthcare staff by offering advice and helping them understand the emotional and psychological needs of the families they work with.

How we can help

When a child is unwell or in hospital, it can be a very difficult time for the whole family. It can bring a range of emotional and practical challenges.

Families may choose to see a paediatric clinical psychologist for different reasons, including:

  • Coping with stressful situations
  • Adjusting to a diagnosis and learning ways to cope
  • Managing the physical and emotional feelings related to medical procedures
  • Thinking about and planning for the future
  • Managing relationships with family and friends
  • Coping with uncertainty or difficult news
  • Balancing caring for your child whilst considering the needs of other children in the family
  • Managing everyday parenting alongside a child’s health condition
