Public Health Nursing Services provide care and support to people and families in the community.
Our services are designed to help you stay healthy and get the right support at every stage of life.
What we offer
Public Health Nursing Services include:
- Health visiting
- School nursing
- School immunisation teams
- Health protection nursing
- Family Nurse Partnership
Health Visiting (0–4 years)
Health visitors are qualified nurses with specialist training. They support families from pregnancy until your child starts school.
They can:
- Visit you at home
- Offer advice on your child’s health and development
- Support you with feeding, sleep, and parenting
- Help you access other services if needed
School Nursing (5–19 years)
School nurses support children and young people from primary school through to age 19.
They provide:
- Health checks and reviews
- Advice on physical and emotional wellbeing
Health Protection Nursing Service
This is a specialist nurse-led service that helps prevent and control infections in the community.
Tuberculosis (TB) services
- Contact tracing and screening for people exposed to TB
- Support for people diagnosed with TB living in the Northern Trust area
- Screening for people arriving from countries where TB is more common
- Advice and support for individuals and families
Vaccinations
- BCG vaccination for children and adults at higher risk of TB
- Vaccination for newborns and children who meet risk criteria
- Hepatitis B vaccination for babies at risk (born to Hepatitis B positive parents)
Other support
- Education and training on TB
- Specialist testing (including Mantoux testing)
This service continues to adapt to meet the needs of people from different communities.
Family Nurse Partnership (FNP)
The Family Nurse Partnership is a free, voluntary programme for young mothers.
It is available if you:
- Are under 20
- Are expecting your first baby
How it helps
A specially trained nurse will support you:
- From early pregnancy
- Until your child is 2 years old
What to expect
- Regular home visits (usually about an hour)
- Advice on pregnancy, birth, and caring for your baby
- Support to make choices that are right for you and your family
- Help to plan your future (education, training, or work)
- Guidance on housing and finances
Partners or family members are welcome to join visits.
