Renal Services

The Renal Unit at Antrim Area Hospital is a purpose-built facility with 20 dialysis stations. It supports and treats patients with kidney disease, offering haemodialysis six days a week.

The unit is located in its own building beside the Emergency Department.

Our Renal Unit offers a range of specialist services, including:

  • Dialysis treatment: Haemodialysis is available at the hospital, with two treatment sessions each day, six days a week.
  • Home dialysis support: We provide training and support for suitable patients who wish to carry out dialysis at home, including peritoneal dialysis and home haemodialysis.
  • Pre-dialysis care: Support and advice for patients preparing for kidney replacement treatments.
  • Outpatient services: Ongoing care for all types of kidney treatment, including follow-up after a kidney transplant.

Patient support

Renal Patient Support Group

This group meets every three months (or more often if needed). It gives patients a chance to learn about treatment options, share feedback, and discuss services. The long-term aim is for the group to be led by patients, with support from clinical staff when needed.

Social work support

A social worker is available through the renal team to offer practical and emotional support.

Counselling

Counselling is available to patients, family members, and carers. You can refer yourself directly or ask a member of the team to arrange this for you.

Wellbeing activities

We run activities such as a walking group and an art group to help patients stay active and connect with others.

Online support – Kidney Beam

You can access ‘Kidney Beam’ – a free online programme designed for people living with kidney disease. It includes exercise classes you can join from home (live or recorded), such as yoga, Pilates, and strength training. Classes are for all fitness levels.

Mental health and wellbeing support, including mindfulness and peer support

We are developing a range of mental health and wellbeing support services, including art therapy, mindfulness, and peer support groups. These free resources are designed to help you feel more supported, stay active, and improve your overall wellbeing.
