Young Homeless Team

Ideally, all young people would grow up in a safe, loving home with strong family support as they move into adulthood. However, this is not always the case. Some young people aged 16 to 18 may become homeless or be at risk of losing their home.

Without a safe place to live, it can be very difficult for a young person to feel secure or have stability in their life. Homelessness can affect:

  • Physical and mental health
  • Education
  • Job opportunities
  • Relationships and connection to the community

Some young people may also experience hidden homelessness, such as staying temporarily with friends (often called sofa surfing) or occasionally sleeping rough.

How the Young Homeless Team can help

The Northern Trust Young Homeless Team supports young people aged 16 to 18 who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

They carry out an early assessment to understand each young person’s needs and risks, and provide support that is tailored to them.

The team can offer:

  • Advice and guidance for young people and their family
  • Support to help rebuild relationships at home, where appropriate
  • Help to remain living at home or with other family members
  • Support to register with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive

Working together

The Young Homeless Team works closely with other organisations to provide the right support, including:

  • Northern Ireland Housing Executive
  • Simon Community (NI)
  • Triangle Floating Support
  • Supported accommodation providers
  • Other Northern Trust services
  • Voluntary and community organisations
  • Government agencies (when needed)
