Advice for when you get home after surgery

  • Getting medical help
    If you need medical advice after you go home, please contact your GP or attend your nearest Emergency Department (ED).

Wound pain

  • Managing discomfort
    It is normal to have some mild discomfort or pain around your wound after your procedure.
  • Pain relief
    You may be given painkillers before you leave hospital. Take these as directed when needed.
  • When to seek help
    If your pain becomes worse or does not improve, contact your GP or doctor for advice.

Rest and diet

  • Rest after your procedure
    You should take it easy for at least 24 hours after you go home.
  • Eating and drinking
    Start with light meals and avoid alcohol during this time.

Feeling sick

  • If you feel unwell
    If you feel sick or vomit, drink fluids only until you feel better.
  • When to seek help
    If the sickness continues, contact your GP for advice.

Follow-up appointments

  • Before you leave
    Any care you may need for your wound, such as having stitches removed, will be explained to you before you leave the Day Surgery Unit.
  • Appointments sent to you
    Any follow-up appointments at the outpatient department will be sent to your home address.
  • Further tests
    If you need additional tests, such as X-rays, details of these appointments will also be sent to your home.
