Job interview guidance for support services roles (text version)

Thank you for watching this Northern Trust video.

We put this video together for people who have been shortlisted for interview.

In this video you will observe the typical steps you will take to get to Antrim Area Hospital and the allocated room on the day of your interview.

We advise that you leave 15 minutes early to allow yourself plenty of time to travel and make yourself comfortable before the interview commences.

Car parking at Antrim Area Hospital is clearly signposted on arrival. The main carpark is situated in front of the main building.

If you use public transport on the day of your interview, you will be left off within the hospital grounds with a short walk to your interview room.

Typically, an interview panel will consist of three members, a mix of male and female when possible.

It is normal for nerves to start kicking in at this stage. The interview room can be an uncomfortable environment, but don’t be afraid. Team North will keep you as relaxed and at ease as possible as they too have once been on the other side of the table.

[Interview Enactment Begins]

Interview Chairperson: “Hello, good morning! Are you here for the 10 O’clock interview?”

Interview Candidate: “Yeah, I am, yep.”

Interview Chairperson: “Okay, pleased to meet you.”

Interview Candidate: “Nice to meet you too.”

Interview Chairperson: “Would you come this way please. Would you like to leave your job description here please”.

Interview Candidate: “No problem, thank you”

Interview Chairperson: “Thank you”

Interview Chairperson: “ok, would you like to take a seat.”

Interview Candidate: “Thank you”

Interview Chairperson: “So good morning! Welcome to your interview. Thank you for interviewing with the Northern Trust. My two colleagues are going to introduce themselves. There’s water in front of you, should you need it.”

Interview Panel Member 2: “Good morning, thanks a lot for coming along to the interview. I’m from Domestic Services in Antrim Hospital.

Interview Panel Member 3: “Thank you very much for attending this interview today. I’m also a Domestic Supervisor here in Antrim Area Hospital.”

Interview Chairperson: “So you’re here to apply for the Domestic Assistance post. So the format of the interview is we will ask you a variety of questions and give us as many answers as you possibly can because it’s a point system and it’s the points that make the prizes. If there’s anything you are not sure of, we’re happy to go back. Are you ready to begin the interview?”

Interview Candidate: “Yeah, I’m happy to start now.”

[Interview Enactment Break]

You will now get to hear the type of question you could get asked at interview. Don’t be afraid to ask for a question to be repeated or reworded if you are uncertain of what is being asked.

[Interview Enactment continues]

Interview Chairperson: “Okay, a confidentiality question… As part of this job you will be required to handle personal information. How would you ensure you adhere to confidentiality guidelines?”

Interview Candidate: “Sorry, I don’t quire fully understand the question, could you explain it please?

[Interview Enactment Break]

Note how this candidate was welcome to ask for the interview question to be explained. This is acceptable because the panel wants you to answer the best you can so they can give you marks.

[Interview Enactment Continues]

Interview Panel Member 2: “So for example, if you were working on a ward and you heard a conversation between a doctor and the nurse in regards to a patient, what would you do with that information that you overheard?”

Interview Candidate: “I would move away from the conversation so I wouldn’t hear any more, and for what I did hear I would treat it as confidentiality.”

Interview Chairperson: “So, thank you very much for answering all our questions. Now we’ve asked you all the questions, do you have any questions you would like us to answer?”

Interview Candidate: “If I am successful in this job, is there any opportunity for progression or promotion within the Northern Trust.”

Interview Panel Member 3: “As an organisation we do support and develop our staff with additional training which could then lead towards promotion within the organisation. So yes, those opportunities are available to all members of staff.”

Interview Panel Member 2: “Yes, that’s right, at the Northern Trust we’re big supporters of personal and professional development.”

Interview Candidate: “That’s great, thank you.”

Interview Panel Member 2: “You’re very welcome.”

Interview Chairperson: “So thank you very much for attending the interview with Northern Trust. You’ll hear back from us within a few days via email and you’re more than welcome to request feedback from your interview performance, okay?

[Interview Enactment Ends]

Once the interview is completed, the chair of the panel will give you information on the next steps and how to request feedback.
