Advice on looking after your baby (text version)

What are the signs of a baby who is well?

  • Regular feeding
  • Wet and dirty nappies – amount depends on their age, see Public Health Agency Birth to Five book
  • Regular breathing pattern
  • Not too hot or cold
  • Normal skin colour, for them

If you are worried about your baby – please speak to your Midwife or GP. The Lullaby Trust Baby check app (The Baby Check App – The Lullaby Trust) or the NHS website is useful for advice if they are showing mild signs of illness.

Please seek urgent medical attention if your baby;

  • Appears blue or very pale
  • Is having difficulty breathing
  • Is very drowsy or hard to wake
  • Has a temperature above 38 degrees Celsius
  • Develops a rash that doesn’t go away when pressed with a glass tumbler

You may need to dial 999 or take them to the nearest hospital emergency department.
