Breast care and breast screening

The Northern Trust Breast Care Service provides both breast screening and care for people with symptoms.

We offer specialist support, diagnosis and treatment for people with breast cancer, as well as care for those with non-cancerous breast conditions.

Our team at Antrim Area Hospital’s Breast Screening and Assessment Unit includes consultant breast surgeons, specialist breast care nurses, and a dedicated breast imaging team.

The imaging team is made up of radiographers, assistant practitioners and advanced practitioners.

We also provide a routine breast screening service for people who do not have any symptoms. Screening helps to detect early signs of breast cancer.

If you are eligible, you will usually be invited to attend an appointment at one of our mobile breast screening units.

Taking part in screening is your choice, but it can help detect breast cancer at an earlier stage — when treatment is more effective — and can save lives.

How to access this service

If you are worried about possible cancer symptoms, you should contact your GP or a breast clinic as soon as possible for advice. You usually cannot refer yourself to this service. The only exception is for family history assessments, where self-referrals are accepted if you include details of the affected family member and a family reference number.
