Direct Current Cardioversion Clinic (DCC Clinic)

The Direct Current Cardioversion (DCC) Clinic provides treatment for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF)—a common heart rhythm condition that causes an irregular heartbeat.

How the service works

Patients are referred to the clinic by a cardiologist or specialty doctor.

Before your appointment

You will receive your appointment details two days in advance

A member of the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) team will contact you by phone to:

  • Confirm your current medications
  • Ensure you are prepared for the procedure
  • Answer any questions or concerns

On the day of treatment

Antrim Area Hospital

  • You will attend the Cardiac Investigation Unit on the morning of your appointment
  • You will then be admitted to the Programmed Treatment Unit (PTU) for your procedure

Causeway Hospital

  • Clinics are held 2–3 times per week in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU)
  • Treatment is delivered as a day case, and you will usually go home the same day

What is Cardioversion?

Cardioversion is a procedure that helps restore a normal heart rhythm using a carefully controlled electric current. It is a safe and commonly used treatment for atrial fibrillation.
