Antrim Area Hospital

The paediatric ward at Antrim Area Hospital provides 24-hour inpatient care for children with both medical conditions and some surgical conditions including ENT surgery.
Our team consists of consultant paediatricians, advanced nurse practitioners, paediatric nurses, allied health professionals and ancillary staff who all strive to provide holistic and family centred care.
Referrals are accepted from a range of sources including emergency department, GPs, paediatric ambulatory and outpatient services.
Acorn Unit

The Acorn Unit provides paediatric ambulatory care Monday to Friday, 1:00pm to 9:30pm, excluding public holidays.
Our team consists of consultant paediatricians, advanced nurse practitioners, paediatric nurses, allied health professionals and ancillary staff who all strive to provide holistic and family centred care.
Referrals are accepted primarily from our emergency department and GPs.
The unit also provides the majority of our outpatient services at Antrim Area Hospital between 9:00am and 1:00pm. Outpatient services are both consultant and nurse led.

Neonatal Unit

The neonatal unit at Antrim Area Hospital provides medical and nursing care to newborn babies, especially those who are premature, sick, or require specialised treatment. The unit has 4 neonatal intensive care cots, 2 high dependency cots and 10 special care cots and provides care for babies born over 27 weeks (28 weeks for twins) gestation and sick newborn babies who require additional support.
The unit is staffed by neonatal nurses, medical staff, advanced neonatal nurse practitioners, enhanced neonatal nurse practitioners and a neonatal clinical educator. There are also allied health professionals within the unit, including a developmental physiotherapist, occupational therapist, dietician and a speech and language therapist. A consultant paediatrician is on call 24 hours a day. Psychology support is also available for parents and siblings.
A neonatal infant feeding lead supports families with neonatal breastfeeding. However, all staff in the unit are trained to support breastfeeding and a clinical educator provides training and support to all nursing staff and neonatal induction to new staff within the unit.

Causeway Children’s Ward provides 24 hour consultant led care for children with both medical conditions and some surgical conditions.
Our team consists of consultant paediatricians, paediatric nurses, allied health professionals and ancillary staff who all strive to provide holistic and family centred care.
Referrals are accepted from a range of sources including the emergency department, GPs, paediatric ambulatory and outpatient services.
The Children’s Ward also offers a range of outpatient clinics and ambulatory care referred by the emergency department or general practitioners.

Children’s Ward provides outpatient services 3 days per week including a rapid response clinic for GP referral and planned ENT surgery.
A range of additional outpatient services are offered at various sites across the Trust including Ballymena Health and Care Centre and Whiteabbey Hospital.
