What is a midwifery-led unit?

A midwifery-led unit is a place to give birth where care is provided by midwives.

It is suitable for women with straightforward low-risk pregnancies. The focus is on supporting a natural birth with as few interventions as possible in a calm and comfortable setting.

Is a midwifery-led unit safe?

Yes, it is a safe option for women with low-risk pregnancies.

Midwives are highly trained and will monitor you and your baby closely throughout labor and birth.

What happens if I need medical care or a doctor?

If you or your baby need extra medical support, you can quickly be transferred to the obstetric unit where doctors and specialist teams are available. Our midwifery-led unit is right next to the obstetric unit, which helps provide reassurance if plans should change.

Can I change my mind during labor?

Yes, you can change your mind at any stage during your labor and move to the obstetric unit. Your midwife will support you and talk through your options.

What comfort measures and pain relief options are available?

We offer a range of comfort measures here in the midwifery-led unit. These include water to help with labor and birth, support with breathing and relaxation techniques, movement and different positions within labor, massage, gas and air, also known as Entonox, and sterile water injections for your back to help with pain there. Your midwife will talk through all your options and support you with whatever you decide.

Can I have a birth partner with me?

Yes, you can have up to two birthing partners with you.

They are encouraged to become involved and help support you during labor and birth.

What is the environment like?

The unit is designed to feel calm and welcoming rather than clinical.

We want the environment to feel as much like home as possible for you and your partner while still providing safe maternity care.

The rooms have soft lighting, space to move around, and equipment like birthing balls and pools to support active labor.

Will I be monitored during labor?

Yes, your midwife will regularly check on you and your baby to make sure everything is progressing safely while encouraging you to stay active and mobile throughout your labor.

Who will support me during labor and birth?

You’ll be cared for by midwives who will stay with you, guide you, and provide one-to-one support during labor.

Is the midwife-led unit right for everyone?

Midwifery-led care is usually recommended for women with low-risk pregnancies. During your antenatal appointments, your midwife can discuss your options with you and decide what is best for you and your baby.
