Maternity bereavement support

Bereavement Support Midwife

Losing a baby at any stage of pregnancy is a deeply upsetting experience for you and your family. We are very sorry for your loss and extend our heartfelt sympathy during this difficult time.

Our Bereavement Support Midwife is here to provide extra care and support if you have experienced a loss. This includes support during pregnancy or after birth, while you are in contact with maternity, gynaecology, neonatal or community services.

They can offer emotional support and provide information and guidance.

How to access support

You can contact the Bereavement Support Midwife in the way that suits you best:

  • Refer yourself directly
  • Ask a healthcare professional to refer you (such as your midwife, nurse, health visitor or GP)

Once referred, the Bereavement Support Midwife will contact you by phone to arrange a suitable time to talk or meet.

The Butterfly Group

The Butterfly Group is a group within Northern Trust maternity services for parents who have experienced the loss of a baby (including miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death).

The purpose of the group is to:

  • Bring parents and staff together
  • Share feedback on experiences of care
  • Help improve bereavement and maternity services for other families

This is not a support group, but some parents find it helpful to contribute to positive change.

We welcome all feedback — both what worked well and what could be improved.
