Eating Disorder Team (Step 3 CAMHS Team)

We support children and young people who have been assessed and diagnosed with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa.

We use a very specific criteria that is listed in DSM-5 to identify and diagnose. Currently, these are the only eating disorders that are treated by this team.

We understand that eating disorders can be difficult to recognise and can affect the whole family. They can be distressing and challenging to manage at home, and we are here to help.

How we support you

We provide specialist, evidence-based support for both young people and their families. Treatment is tailored to each individual’s needs and focuses on both physical and emotional recovery.

Early support often focuses on improving physical health and helping to manage distress. This may include:

  • Medical monitoring
  • Nutritional advice, including meal planning and support with weight restoration
  • Therapeutic support to manage eating disorder behaviours

Therapy

As a young person becomes physically healthier, and their weight is restored, we offer talking therapies to support their recovery. This may include exploring their relationship with food, body image, and self-esteem, as well as addressing related difficulties such as anxiety or low mood.

Our team is trained in a range of therapies, including family therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

Our team

Young people and their families are supported by a key worker and family worker. We work together to agree the best approach to care.

Our team of different professionals work closely to support young people who are impacted by eating disorders.

First appointment

All young people referred to the service will be offered an initial (CHOICE) appointment. This is an opportunity to share concerns, understand current difficulties, and decide together on the most appropriate next steps.

Following this, we may:
