We provide maternity care at Antrim Area Hospital and Causeway Hospital, supported by a dedicated team of community midwives. Our aim is to ensure you and your family receive the right care, in the right place, at every stage of your pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.
During your pregnancy, you can view details of your maternity appointments and some test results through the My Care patient portal.
Antrim Area Hospital
Antrim Area Hospital provides the full range of maternity services, including inpatient and outpatient maternity care, labour and birth services, an Emergency Obstetric Unit, obstetric care, postnatal care and neonatal support. You may attend a range of antenatal and specialist clinics during your pregnancy, including routine check-ups, scans, midwifery-led clinics and specialist services such as diabetes and multiple pregnancy clinics. Care is also provided through our Day Obstetric Unit, where additional monitoring or assessment may be required.
Causeway Hospital
Causeway Hospital provides maternity care during pregnancy and after your baby is born, including support from midwives and access to antenatal clinics for routine check-ups and scans. A specialist maternity clinic also provides ongoing care throughout pregnancy. If you choose a hospital birth, your baby will be born at Antrim Area Hospital.
Birth options available to you
We offer different maternity care options to suit you and your family. During your pregnancy, we will talk with you about your care and help you choose what’s best for you, based on your health, your pregnancy history and your preferences.
Midwifery-Led Unit (MLU), Antrim Area Hospital
If you have a low-risk pregnancy, you may choose to give birth in our Midwifery-Led Unit.
Our Midwifery-Led Unit is led by midwives and offers a calm, comfortable, home-like environment for labour and birth. Midwives provide your care throughout labour, birth and the immediate postnatal period.
The Birthing Suite, Antrim Area Hospital
The Birthing Suite is an obstetric-led unit for women who may require additional medical support during labour and birth, or whose pregnancy has become more complex. You will be cared for by a midwife throughout your labour and birth, with support from the obstetric team when needed. This ensures that you and your baby have access to specialist care and expertise throughout your stay.
Home birth
If you have a healthy pregnancy and are expecting one baby, a home birth may be an option for you. Giving birth at home can offer the comfort and reassurance of familiar surroundings. Your midwife will discuss your individual circumstances, answer any questions you may have, and help you decide whether a home birth is the right choice for you and your family. Midwives will attend your labour and birth at home and provide care for you and your baby during the early postnatal period.
