Stroke services

The Northern Trust provides specialist stroke care, rehabilitation and ongoing support for people who have experienced a stroke. Our multidisciplinary teams work together to deliver high quality, evidence based care from the point of emergency treatment through to rehabilitation and longer term recovery.

The Northern Trust has dedicated stroke units at:

Antrim Area Hospital – Ward A6 Stroke Unit

  • 12 Acute Stroke Unit beds
  • We deliver specialist assessment, treatment and monitoring for patients in the acute phase of stroke

Causeway Hospital – Acute Elder Medicine and Stroke Unit

  • 12 Acute Stroke Unit beds
  • We deliver specialist assessment, treatment and monitoring for patients in the acute phase of stroke

Stroke Rehabilitation Unit – Whiteabbey Hospital

  • The Stroke Rehabilitation Unit supports patients who require intense ongoing rehabilitation following the acute phase of their stroke. The unit focuses on maximising recovery, promoting independence, and preparing patients for discharge home or to their next care setting.
  • A number of other ‘step down’ facilities are also offered within the trust for patients who do not need intense therapy but are not yet ready to return to their own homes
