The Northern Healthy Lifestyle Partnership is a multi-sector and multi-disciplinary group responsible for the local delivery of the regional strategy: Fitter Futures for All – Preventing and addressing overweight and obesity in Northern Ireland 2012 -2022.

Fitter Futures for All Strategy

Five percent of Primary one pupils were classified as obese in 2016/2017 within the Northern Trust (Child Health System).

In 2017/2018 almost 25 per cent of Year 8 pupils in the Northern Trust were either overweight or obese, (Public Health Nursing).

According to the Northern Ireland Health Survey 2017/2018:

  • 27% of children and young people aged 2-15 years are overweight/obese
  • 64 % of adults aged 16 years and over or overweight or obese

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has defined Obesity as: “the abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health” (WHO 2018).
